Transmission and Storage Structures

FRP

In addition to its pipeline capabilities, the Tyfo® system can also be used to upgrade other pressure vessels, such as storage tanks. Many other structural elements found in treatment plants can also be strengthened (see Buildings page for specific information on columns, beams, slabs, walls and beam-column connections).

Potential structural uses include the following:

  • Increase available hoop stress (increase internal pressure capacity)*
  • Leak remediation and prevention
  • Protection from corrosion and replacing strength lost due to corrosion
  • Seismic upgrades
  • Emergency repairs*
  • Increase bending strength
  • Increase compression strength due to external loading*

*These applications involve more complex designs. Special detailing and coordination will typically be involved.

The Tyfo® system can be used to strengthen chimneys, tanks and silos. The high strength-to-weight ratio of these composite materials makes them an ideal alternative to the more cumbersome steel and concrete retrofits.

The Tyfo® systemscan be used to meet the following design goals:

  • Seismic retrofit
  • Shear strengthening
  • Flexural strengthening
  • Confinement
  • Repair of corrosion or other structural degradation
  • Correct design flaws
  • Internal pressure

The Tyfo® system adds minimal dead load to the structure and is relatively easy to install. Fyfe Co. engineers can provide design guidance and cost estimates for rehabilitating chimneys, tanks and silos.
