Our Tyfo® advanced composite system can be used to strengthen existing beams, columns, slabs, structural connections and walls. Installed by certified applicators, these systems offer solutions for seismic retrofitting, corrosion strengthening, change of use or even the correction of an existing defect due to a construction or design error.

Our building-strengthening applications have been implemented in hospitals, government structures, churches, schools, parking structures, office buildings, homes and many other structures. These buildings have been both occupied and unoccupied at the time of retrofit.

The Tyfo® system can be used to increase the structural performance of both reinforced concrete, steel and wood beams.

The potential structural uses include the following:

  • Shear strengthening
  • Positive movement enhancement
  • Negative movement enhancement
  • Torsion strengthening*
  • Supplement cut steel / openings
  • Correction of an existing construction and/or design error*

* These applications involve more complex and/or limited designs. Special detailing and project coordination will typically be involved. 

The majority of the structural elements completed have been reinforced concrete and pre-stressed/post-tensioned concrete. However, steel encased members, steel members and wood components (timber elements, glulam elements and truss members) can all be enhanced to some degree.

Given the basic project parameters (specifically the detailed performance goal and the existing capacity of the structural element), Fyfe engineers will provide a preliminary composite design and cost estimate.

The Tyfo® system can be used to increase the structural performance of reinforced concrete structural connections*. Connections are more complex than other designs and all relevant project parameters must be properly understood before proceeding. The Tyfo® system has provided connection strengthening between floor panels and roof panels  and enhanced wall-to-diaphragm connections as well as various beam-column connections. The potential structural uses include the following:

  • Joint shear strengthening*
  • Shear transfer*
  • Force transfer / progressive collapse prevention*
  • Correction of an existing construction and/or design error*
